Abstract

The snob character has an understanding started during the Tanzimat (Ottoman Reformation) Period, considering all deeds as acceptable, and reducing the concept of “westernization” only in appearance. These characters, who do not understand the core meaning of the westernization concept but acting only with a fictional approach were those considering using French words in their sentences, getting on lando carriages (a former carriage in Ottoman period), and wandering around recreation areas, etc. as the acts required for westernization, and they were highly criticized by Tanzimat novelists using ironic language for them. After the Tanzimat Period, the snob character was transformed to another character we may call “loafer” character, although the character continued to have the features of the same character. Continuing your life without a specific goal, “idleness” expression used for people who do not care about life, living on a day-to-day basis a new existence already emerges with modern society. It is a “idle type” who has read, who sees himself in an upper position from society, arrogant, who applies his mind without considering any criterion or moral rule and keeps his life in a tiny community, other than the type of snob, an evolved snob. In this context, we aim to discuss the thesis that the idle (loafer) type is a continuation of the snob type and evolved, and to reveal the change that the snob type turns into idleness
