Abstract

In this study, the purpose was to compare the role of traditional and new media in the formation and reproduction of gender. The new media, whose influence and prevalence is increasing with new communication environments, has significant effects on the adoption and internalization of social gender roles. According to the results of the present study, changes and transformations are observed in media contents as stereotypes about gender roles in society change. Just as it is the case in traditional media means, it is seen in the new media that women, who are represented as “spouse and mother”, or “sexual objects” in domestic roles, are now represented as “free and successful individuals” in business life. This process, which has proceeded slowly in traditional media, is now moving faster in new media.
