EXAMINATION OF FEMICIDES IN HURRIYET.COM.TR IN TERMS OF RHETORIC NEWS ANALYSIS METHOD

Abstract

Media, which broads its sphere of influence day by day, is an important determinant of social structure. Media obtains this power through storifying real incidents eclectically. Occurrence of the news are reconstruction rather than reflecting the reality. One of the fields where reality is reconstructed is in the representation of women in media especially in the cases where they are the target of violence. The most extreme violence incident towards women is murder. According to Women's Murders Stop Platform (KCDP), 409 women were murdered in Turkey only in 2017. This statistic solely is an indicator that violence towards women is not a discrete but a fundamental phenomenon. It is rarely uttered in media that women were murdered due to an action or a behavior that is not their blame. Or femicides are represented directly as an individual problem instead of structural reasons such as economic, cultural, political etc. In some cases, the essential cause of this kind of murders are concealed by associating them with cultural and traditional structure of a particular geography division. Continuity in femicides cause increase in murder news quantitatively. At this point, internet journalism which can reach rapidly and to more people, different than the traditional printed/visual media, becomes crucial in murder news. For this purpose, femicides that took place and made news in the above-mentioned news portal between the years 2013-2018 were examined with news analysis method. Thus, the appearance of femicides in internet journalism will be discussed within the language of the news, its frame, the form of its presentation, how femicides are perceived and commented on in terms of perpetrators, victims and society and it was aimed to propose solutions within the context of right-based journalism principals and journalism understanding. Consequently, as it can be seen in this study that usually murders are either reduced to interpersonal relations or protected with the “honor” shield by being separated from its socio-economic context. Thus, the reader is separated from its real context since news narration contain overtones as if the reader is reading a detective novel.
