University Students' Gender Perceptions and Sexual Attitudes Examining

Abstract

This research was carried out in order to evaluate the gender perception and sexual attitudes of the students of the Sociology department of a university in the Aegean region. The population of the study was 235 students enrolled in the Sociology department of this university in the 2019-2020 academic year. It was targeted to reach all students and no sample account was used. This descriptive research was carried out with 184 students who voluntarily participated in the research and filled the questionnaire forms completely. Three questionnaires were used in the research. The first of these forms was created by the authors and aimed to determine the introductory features of the students. The second questionnaire is the Gender Perception Scale and the third is the Hendrick Sexual Attitude Scale. The data of the research were analyzed in SPSS 20.0 statistics program. In the analysis, number, percentage and normality test, Kruskal Wallis and Mann Whitney U test, correlation test were used. In the study, 87% of the students participating are women, 93% are between the ages of 18-23, 95.7% are single; the total monthly income of the family of the majority of students is 3000 TL and below. 73.3% of the students stated that they have a democratic family structure, 44% stated that they define themselves as very religious / religious. 38% of the students stated that they never talked about sexuality with their mother and 79.3% with their father; less than half (42.4%) stated that they found the level of sexual knowledge sufficient; approximately 70% stated that sexual health lessons should be given as compulsory lessons in schools. According to the score from the scales; it was found that female students studying in the senior year have more ideal, balanced and healthy sexual attitude and more positive gender perception.
