MORPHOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT IN ÇORUM

Abstract

Urban morphology research follows the traces of the change and transformation the human has made in the space within the historical process. It is essential to follow the historical process method for morphological research. From this point of view, it can be understood that Çorum is an important laboratory for humanity. It is possible to trace the history of humanity from Hattusa to the present day. Urbanization refers to the increasing number of people that live in urban areas. However, urbanization is the name of a multidimensional process that contributes to the formation of many components far beyond one-dimensional population accumulation process. The concept of urbanization is loaded with social, economic and political meanings according to the level of development. For this reason, urbanization in Çorum shows a different character in every period depending on demographic, socioeconomic and political developments. Regarding the urban development process of Çorum, it can be said that it is divided into two different categories; the first one is before the Republic and the second one is the Republican era. The period before the Republic is the urbanization process where the heritage of Hattusa continues and supported by the mineral processing sector, shaped by the typical development characteristics of the cities of the agricultural period. At the same time, because of its location on important trade routes, many civilizations have settled in the region. The Republican period is divided into four different periods: -1923-1950 early republic period: Preparations for Transition from Agriculture to Industry - 1950-1970 period: Small Industrial City -1970-1990 period: Transportation Effect in Urban Pattern - After 1990: The Disintegrated Urban Pattern In the relevant periods, it is possible to trace different processes and urban adventures that determine the urbanization process in Çorum. In the emergence of different urban morphology, the urbanization story of Çorum was created by analyzing the social and economic changes experienced on the urban texture.
